MUSLIM AMERICAN PUBLIC AFFAIRS COUNCIL

Meeting with Attorney General Josh Stein

  • 22 Mar 2024
  • 5:30 AM

Dear MAPAC members

On March 22, 2024, from 4:30 PM to 5:30 PM the Muslim American Public Affairs Council (“MAPAC”) board of trustees (BOT) and a group of the community leaders met with the Attorney General Josh Stein at Masjid King Khalid located in Raleigh, North Carolina.

The main topics of discussion

  •  AG Stein's roles and responsibilities as Attorney General
  •  AG Stein's decision not to sue Shaw University to protect Masjid King Khalid from being forcibly shut down despite him having the authority to do so
  •  His vocal support for the state of Israel while choosing to remain silent about the injustices suffered by the Palestinian people
  •  His opinion regarding the North Carolina Divestment from Companies Boycotting Israel Act of 2017 and whether or not companies like Ben & Jerry's should be targeted by our state government for taking a stand against unjust Israeli policies
  •  Rising Islamophobia throughout the country
  •  Right of freedom of speech for those on college campuses advocating for Palestinian rights
  •  His department's involvement in the fight against human trafficking

Regarding Masjid King Khalid’s legal case, AG Stein promised to keep the conversation going. However, a noncommitment on this issue simply does not translate to optimism on the part of the Muslim community. We look forward to revisiting the issue with him at our future candidate forum.
